Types of Vanagon Engine Conversions done/available :
Vanagons are wonderful....a most excellent chassis and body . . ... . the engine however, usually needs "more" . . ..more durability ( especially ) more power and torque, or much better fuel economy ( think diesels, TD's, TDI's ), or all of the above. Thus :
| SUBARU | early 90's 2.2 liter engine, usually from Legacy - 4 valves per cylinder, single overhead cam, distributorless ignition, knock sensor, 135 horse power . .. . turns 6,000 prm. |
| engines | later 90's 2.5 liter, dual overhad cams, same features as above, 155 horsepower . . .. .. can do 6,500 rpm. |
|
When you have one of these in a 4-speed Vanagon it will do
80 mph in 3rd gear ! This is the '96 2.5 liter engine. Compared to a stock 2.1 liter waterboxer ( aka "wasserleaker" ) engine, this powerplant has greatly enhanced throttle response, with 40% more power and torque. . . . . . .and, these engines have real head gaskets ( not the waterboxer's o-rings and rubber "water gaskets" ) ! It's a full decade newer in technology than the stock Vanagon engine. |
